Spinal Decompression

If you are experiencing persistent neck or back pain, spinal decompression may be an effective solution. Dr. Gregory Griffin and the staff at Elite Spine & Sport in Duncanville, TX, will provide the care and treatment you need.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a modality of therapy that has been proven to help relieve back, neck, and related nerve pain. Pressure due to illness, injury, or movement habits can impose on the spine, nerves, surrounding muscles, and tissues, causing intermittent or persistent discomfort. In addition, the cushion-like discs between the vertebrae are subject to herniation and can become misaligned, which can cause debilitating pain that affects daily activity.

The purpose of the procedure is to gently stretch the spine and take pressure off the affected bones, discs, muscles, and tendons. Alone or in conjunction with other treatments, spinal decompression can reduce pain associated with several ailments, including:

  • Degenerative discs
  • Disc herniation
  • Blood circulation
  • Muscle tension
  • Sciatica nerve pain

How Is Spinal Decompression Performed?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive procedure performed in-office by a doctor. First, a doctor will fit you with two harnesses, one around the pelvis and another around your midsection. You are then positioned on a mechanical table which the doctor operates to adjust your position according to your particular treatment needs.

Your doctor will determine the duration of your treatment, which may take place over the course of one or two months. Each session typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

Often spinal decompression is augmented by additional treatments such as electrical stimulation and heat or cold therapy. Some different treatments include:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Exercise
  • Bracing

What Are The Risks Of Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is not for everyone. You may not be a good candidate for spinal decompression if you have fractures, tumors, advanced osteoporosis, metal implants, or are pregnant. After a careful assessment, your doctor will determine if the procedure is appropriate for your unique situation.
